چکیده

Mass-balance measurements describe the difference between accumulation and ablation and therefore the annual climate response of a glacier. Such measurements are the standard observation of glacier ‘health’ and when coupled with frontal, area or volume observations can describe the dynamic response of a glacier to climate over longer time scales. Mass balance measurements are made in situ and are logistically intensive. Satellite-based techniques have yet to replace traditional measurements although the subject has received a great deal of attention. Here we report on the testing of a proxy algorithm that was developed for Svalbard glaciers and uses Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery. Applied to the complex topography of two icecaps the method failed to correlate glacier facies area with mass balance observations. Our experiment shows more novel approaches are needed to find functional glacier monitoring solutions.

Sar Backscatter Inversion Model for Estimation of Snow Properties

This paper presents an inverse model for SAR backscatter X band designed to snow and ice surfaces. The model inversion enables estimating the morphological characteristics of snow cover from SAR data. X Cosmo-Skymed sensor data was used in the experiment tested here for the region of Union Glacier Antarctica. We observed a precision in determining the estimated size of snow grains about 94%. Th...

Investigations of Airborne Laser Scanning Signal Intensity on Glacial Surfaces - Utilizing Comprehensive Laser Geometry Modeling and Orthophoto Surface Modeling (a Case Study: Svartisheibreen, Norway)

A comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) was developed to determine how the laser intensity of an Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) system was affected by 1) geometry and 2) surface type. The study area contained the Svartisheibreen glacier (Svartisen, Norway) and its immediate surroundings. A model was created which contained laser intensity, surface type, surface elevation, and the sca...

Monitoring of Wet Snow and Accumulations at High Alpine Glaciers Using Radar Technologies

Conventional studies to assess the annual mass balance for glaciers rely on single point observations in combination with model and interpolation approaches. Just recently, airborne and spaceborne data is used to support such mass balance determinations. Here, we present an approach to map temporal changes of the snow cover in glaciated regions of Tyrol, Austria, using SAR-based satellite data....

Estimation of Ice Flow Velocity of Calving Glaciers Using Sar Interferometry and Feature Tracking

Changes in velocity of the large outlet glaciers and ice streams in Antarctica are important for ice sheet mass balance and hence sea level. The ice flow velocity is also a critical variable in understanding glacier dynamics. Polar Record Glacier, with a calved iceberg in front, is about 50 km to the west of the Zhongshan Station, East Antarctica. SAR interferometry can detect the surface displ...

Balance of Payment Constrained Growth in Tow Developing and Developed Oil-Exporting Economies (Case Study: Iran and Norway)

In this study, we aim to compare results of the basic and extensive forms of the Thirlwall model (balance of payment constrained growth model) for two economies including Iran and Norway. In this model, demand variables i. e. export and import determine the limit of economic growth in the long run. The balance of payment (deficit) can be a factor as a constraint on the rate of growth of output ...
